Tents

Tents is a logic puzzle on a square grid of trees. Place exactly one tent beside each tree, directly above, below, left or right of it, so that no two tents touch, not even at a corner, and every row and column holds the number of tents shown at its edge.

How to play

Grids grow from 6×6 at Easy to 8×8, 10×10 and 12×12 at Expert. Every puzzle here has exactly one solution that logic alone reaches, and its level is set by the hardest technique it needs.

  • Every tree has its own tent directly beside it, never diagonally; there are as many tents as trees.
  • Tents never touch each other, not even diagonally.
  • The number left of each row and above each column tells how many tents it holds.
  • Trees cannot be moved or covered.

Playing on this site

  • Tap a cell to place a tent, tap again to mark it as grass, and once more to clear it.
  • Drag across cells to paint the same mark along the way; the whole drag is one undo step.
  • With a keyboard, use the arrow keys to move and Space to cycle the mark.
  • A row or column count fades once its tents are all placed and turns red if it has too many.
  • Grass is only a helper: the puzzle is solved as soon as every tent is in place.
  • Hint points out misplaced tents and grass first, then names the next technique and highlights where it applies.
  • Your puzzle is saved in this browser, so you can come back to it later.

Techniques by level

Every technique the solver knows, from easiest to hardest. A puzzle's level is the hardest one it needs.

Easy

No tree nearby
A tent always stands right beside its tree (not diagonally). These cells have no tree beside them.
No touching
Tents never touch, not even at a corner, so the cells around this tent are grass.
Count reached
This row or column already has its tents, so the rest is grass.
Count needs all
This row or column has exactly as many open cells as tents still missing.
Last spot for a tree
This tree has no tent yet and only one free cell beside it, so its tent goes there.

Medium

Fitting the count
Every way to place this line's tents without touching agrees on the marked cells.

Hard

One tent per tree
The other choice here would leave some tree without a tent of its own, or a tent without a tree.

Expert

Contradiction
Assume the opposite in the marked cell and a rule breaks a few steps later. So it can only be this.

Questions

How do I start a Tents puzzle?

Mark grass on every cell that has no tree directly beside it, and fill rows and columns whose count is 0. Then look for a tree with only one free cell next to it: its tent must go there, and the eight cells around that tent become grass.

Will I ever have to guess?

No. Every puzzle has exactly one solution that logic alone reaches, at every level.

Is Tents free to play here?

Yes. Every level is free, with no account and no sign-in.
