Switches
Switches is a light-toggling puzzle on a square grid. Some cells are lit. Pressing a cell flips it and its four neighbours, on to off and off to on. Turn every light off.
How to play
Each puzzle has a par, the fewest presses that clear it. Levels are board sizes, from 4×4 at Easy to 7×7 at Expert, and the par grows with them.
- Pressing a cell flips that cell and the cells directly above, below, left and right of it.
- Pressing the same cell twice undoes it, so the order of presses never matters.
- The puzzle is solved when every light is off.
Playing on this site
- Tap a cell to press it.
- Lit cells glow with a ring; your presses and the par show above the board.
- Hint names the step, chase or top row, and shows the cell to press.
- Your game is saved in this browser, so you can come back to it later.
Techniques by level
Every technique the solver knows, from easiest to hardest. A puzzle's level is the hardest one it needs.
Questions
Is there a method that always works?
Yes. Press the cell below each light, row by row, until only the bottom row is lit. That pattern tells you which top-row cells to press; press them and chase down again.
Can every puzzle be solved?
Yes. Some patterns can never be cleared; every puzzle here is made from presses on a dark board, and a solver finds its par.
Is Switches free to play here?
Yes. Every level is free, with no account and no sign-in.
